Fire Guts Lagos Airport

There was stampede at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday, due to a fire which engulfed the fourth and fifth floors of the building.

It was gathered that a member of staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) noticed smoke coming from the terminal and notified the authorities.

The news of the fire reportedly caused personnel on the eighth floor to scamper to avoid being caught in the fire.

Men of the fire department of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who were drafted to the scene, prevented the fire from spreading to sensitive parts of the airport.

Movements were restricted by security officials during the intervention period.

The development disrupted activities at the various airline counters and offices.

Managing Director of FAAN, Richard Aisuebeogun, was at the airport by 2.00 p.m. to assess the damage.

General Manager, Public Affairs, NAMA, Mr. Supo Atobatele, confirmed the incident, but said that it did not affect the agency’s operations.

Atobatele said that the fire was caused by spark from the distribution box in the equipment room of the control tower.

He sated that due to the outbreak, NAMA operations at Lagos airport was put under Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), adding that the Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) were still directing flight at the airport.

According to him, efforts were being made to correct the fault.
